Neal Bench, MBA, CPA
PRESIDENT
Chapel Hill, NC - Neal Bench, MBA, CPA, is a retired manufacturing finance professional who has remained active in nonprofit service through various committees and boards. Living with choroideremia (CHM), Neal has been closely involved with the CHM community and is a dedicated fundraiser for the annual Penn Orphan Disease Center Million Dollar Bike Ride, helping raise funds to support CHM research. In 2021, Neal ran the New York City Marathon as part of Team CHM with his son, Karsten Bench, serving as his guide. Neal lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with his wife, Jeanette, who also volunteers at CRF events. Together, they are active supporters of the Foundation and the families it serves.
John Trott, MBA
1ST VICE PRESIDENT
Westfield, NJ - John Trott, MBA, retired from Johnson & Johnson after more than 15 years with the company, where he served in global marketing leadership roles focused on HIV therapeutics and vaccines. During his career, he led global marketing initiatives, portfolio planning, and business development efforts. John has been involved with the Choroideremia Research Foundation since 2015 and has served on its Executive Committee. Living with choroideremia (CHM), John is passionate about supporting the CHM community and advancing awareness and research. He lives in New Jersey with his wife, Dominique, and his guide dog, Emerald.
Michael Mullen
2nd vice president
Caramel, IN - Michael Mullen serves as Second Vice President of the Choroideremia Research Foundation, bringing extensive experience in financial services, investment management, and leadership to the Foundation’s Board of Directors. He is an Executive Director and Senior Portfolio Management Director at Morgan Stanley, where he also serves as a Lending Specialist and Financial Advisor. Throughout his career, Michael has worked with individuals and families to navigate complex financial decisions and pursue their long-term goals. Based in Carmel, Indiana, he is proud to use his professional expertise to support the Foundation’s mission.
Brian Mayer
SECRETARY
Brookfield, IL - Brian Mayer was diagnosed with Choroideremia as a teenager while under the care of Dr. Gerald Fishman at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He attended the 2006 Choroideremia Research Foundation (CRF) Conference in Chicago with his uncle, Bill Tucker, a founding member of the organization. Inspired by that experience, Brian became actively involved in fundraising and communications efforts to support the CRF’s mission. He was elected to the CRF Board of Directors in 2018 and continues to serve as Secretary on the Executive Committee. Brian attended the University of Illinois at Chicago and Triton College in River Grove, Illinois, where he earned an associate degree in marketing management. After more than a decade working in several Ace Hardware stores, he joined Ace Hardware’s corporate office in Oak Brook, Illinois, in 1998. Brian continues his career at Ace as Technical Services Manager in the Customer Care department. He resides in the western suburbs of Chicago.
Tara Cassidy-Driscoll

Swampscott, MA - Tara Cassidy Driscoll serves as an Officer at Large on the Board of Directors of the Choroideremia Research Foundation, bringing both professional experience and a personal connection to the Foundation’s mission. Her two sons are affected by choroideremia (CHM), making the Foundation’s efforts to advance research, support families, and ultimately find a cure deeply meaningful to her. Tara owns Cassidy Associates Insurance Agency Inc. in Swampscott, Massachusetts, where she applies years of experience in the insurance industry and a commitment to serving her clients and community.
Mary Porter, JD
AT-LARGE
Berlin, MA - Mary Porter is an intellectual property (patent) attorney who began her career in science (food, biochemistry and materials science). She retired from an in-house position as Chief IP Counsel several years ago and now works part time for an IP law firm where she counsels businesses on their IP rights, business transactions and contracts. She relaxes by spending time outdoors on a bike and in the woods, the water and the garden; creating in the kitchen; and enjoying live theater and music. A female carrier of CHM, Mary has been a CRF member since 2017 when her nephew Peter Boone introduced her to the foundation. She has served on the CRF Research Committee since 2021, and joined the Board of Directors in 2022 and the Executive Committee in 2024. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the 19 Carter community center in Berlin, Massachusetts, and the League of Women Voters of the Worcester Area, and serves on the Town of Berlin Finance Committee.
Liza N. Zumsteg, CPA
TREASURER
West Chester, PA - Liza N. Zumsteg, CPA, serves as Treasurer of the Choroideremia Research Foundation, where she combines her professional expertise with a cause that is deeply personal. Her father has choroideremia (CHM), making the Foundation's mission to advance research and ultimately find a cure especially meaningful to her. Liza is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with extensive experience in nonprofit finance and currently serves as the Financial Controller for the YMCA of Greater Brandywine. Throughout her career, she has been committed to strong financial stewardship, transparency, and supporting organizations that make a meaningful impact. She is proud to contribute her financial expertise to help ensure the Foundation's resources are managed responsibly as it works to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by CHM.

Brian Counter
Champaign, IL - Brian Counter is a retired senior research analyst, working in statistics in higher education for his entire career. He spent 17 years at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and 15 years at Parkland College. He received a statewide award from his professional organization near the end of his career. Brian has been part of the CHM community for a while, having run a CHM music trivia night for the last five years. He is on his second term on the CRF Board of Directors, is on the board's nominating committee, and has made minor contributions to various CRF endeavors that provide support for the CHM community.
Thomas Driscoll
Swampscott, MA - Thomas Driscoll brings experience in professional services and account management, along with a personal connection to the CHM community. Thomas lives with choroideremia (CHM) and is passionate about raising awareness and helping connect individuals and families with information and support. He is an Account Executive at Kantata, where he helps professional services organizations navigate complex challenges and manage their business needs. Thomas earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Spanish from Guilford College and is proud to contribute his professional experience and perspective to the CHM community.
Naama Goldman-Einhorn, PhD
Tel-Aviv, Israel - Naama Goldman-Einhorn, PhD, is a clinical psychologist based in Tel Aviv, Israel. She has served on the Choroideremia Research Foundation's Board of Directors since 2021, bringing an international perspective and a thoughtful commitment to supporting the Foundation's mission and the global CHM community.
Aurelie Harp
New York, NY - Aurelie Harp joined the Choroideremia Research Foundation Board of Directors four years ago. She is a female CHM carrier and the mother of two children navigating this condition: a 17-year-old son with CHM, and a 15-year-old daughter, also a carrier. As a French-American with other relatives affected by CHM in France, she is passionate about connecting CRF and Choroïdérémie France and other organizations around the world, and helping build a culture where researchers, families, and younger members work together, both to advance treatment and to support one another along the way. Professionally, she is a certified relational and group development coach, creative consultant, and founder of Wemanity Coaching. She holds a Master's in Marketing Research and Strategy and is certified in Social Therapy. She is also a theater performer and director, and for over 20 years has worked at the intersection of group development, leadership, and the performing arts.
Bob Hillier
Brantford, Ontario, Canada - Bob Hillier is a retired hydrogeologist, entrepreneur, and former ginseng producer from Ontario, Canada. Throughout his career, he combined scientific expertise with business leadership and has remained actively involved in his community through volunteer service on numerous local boards and organizations. Bob is a founding member of both the Choroideremia Research Foundation (CRF) and the Choroideremia Research Foundation Canada (CRFC). He currently serves as President of CRFC, where he continues to support research, advocacy, and the global CHM community.
Michael Laengsfeld
Friedburg/Hessen, Germany - Michael Laengsfeld brings extensive experience in financial services, leadership, and advocacy for people who are blind or have low vision, along with a personal connection to the CHM community. Michael lives with choroideremia (CHM) and has been actively involved in advancing support and representation for people with vision loss. He has served as CEO of the German Federation of the Blind and Partially Sighted (DBSV) since 2018 and is a European Patient Advocate with the European Reference Network for Rare Eye Diseases (ERN-EYE). He also works with Retina International and has spent more than three decades with Commerzbank in Frankfurt, Germany. Based in Friedberg, Hesse, Michael brings an international perspective and a strong commitment to the CHM and broader vision-loss communities.
Jason McKinney, MBA
Gilmer, TX - Jason McKinney has been part of the choroideremia community since he was a teenager. Living with CHM himself, he founded the first international support group for people affected by the condition at age 17 — a community whose continuity would eventually give rise to the Choroideremia Research Foundation, of which Jason became a founding Board member in 2000. Since then, he has run regional patient meetings, served on the Patient Engagement Committee, and helped connect newly diagnosed families with a community that understands what they're facing. Today, legally blind from CHM, Jason brings a rare vantage point to the disease — as both patient and researcher. He holds a BAAS and MBA from UT Tyler, and his research explores the disease from firsthand experience, spanning patient self-management, theoretical disease framework, and novel disease mechanisms. He lives in rural East Texas.
Yamil Rosete Rodriguez
New York, NY - Yamil Rosete Rodriguez is a Senior Software Engineer at Mastercard, with a career spanning consulting, media and entertainment, and financial technology. He is deeply committed to supporting CRF’s research efforts and passionate about making a difference in the lives of those affected by this vision-impairing condition. Outside of his professional and advocacy work, he enjoys playing guitar, singing folk songs, traveling, spending time in nature, and volunteering for social causes.
John Salois
Holden, MA - Jon Salois is the Vice President of Sales at Atlas Distributing, Inc, a family-owned and operated beer and beverage distributor in central and western MA. He has been a CRF Board Member since 2022 and serves on the Board of Directors for the Worcester Canal Diggers 5K. Jon earned his MBA from NYU Stern School of Business and Bachelor of Science degree from the Boston College Carroll School of Management. He has Choroideremia and is passionate about raising awareness to help work towards a cure. Jon lives in Holden, MA with his wife and two children.
Sarah Thompson
Prescott, AZ - Sarah Thompson is a CHM mom and carrier. Since her diagnosis in 2017, she has encouraged and supported the many fundraising efforts of her family. Sarah has a degree in biology and enjoys volunteering in the community, helping as a Kindergarten Teacher Aide and serving on the Arizona Crisis Team. As a skilled pianist, she enjoys working as an accompanist and church organist. Her biggest accomplishment is raising five children, who, along with her husband, make life joyful and fulfilling.
Rachel Oster
Rochester, NY - Rachel L. Oster is a humanitarian who works for a local non-profit assisting adults who live with disabilities. She has been affiliated with the CRF since its inception. Rachel lives with choroideremia as a carrier, and is the daughter of the late, wonderful John Oster. She is a mom, wife, sister and daughter, and a grateful member of the CRF dedicated to finding a cure for those who live with this disease.
John-Ross Rizzo, MD
New York, NY - JohnRoss Rizzo is a physician-scientist, rehabilitation medicine specialist, and engineer at NYU Langone Health, where he serves as Vice Chair for Health Equity and Innovation, Health Systems Director for the Institute for Excellence in Health Equity, Professor with appointments in Rehabilitation Medicine, Ophthalmology, Neurology, and the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. As a clinician-scientist living with choroideremia, his research focuses on developing AI-powered assistive technologies, accessible navigation systems, and rehabilitation innovations that improve independence and quality of life for people who are blind or have low vision. In addition to his academic and clinical roles, Dr. Rizzo serves on the boards of VISIONS, the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), Lighthouse Guild, and several other organizations, advocating for accessibility, disability inclusion, and health equity. Through his research, clinical care, and community engagement, he is committed to advancing technologies and policies that empower individuals with vision loss to live, work, and thrive independently.
Kayla Schiller
Mission, KS - Kayla Schiller brings extensive experience in tax accounting and financial services, along with a personal connection to the CHM community. Her father has choroideremia (CHM), giving her a personal understanding of the condition's impact on individuals and families. Kayla is a Senior Tax Manager at GE, bringing experience in the insurance, financial services, and other industries. She is proud to contribute her expertise and perspective to CRF and advocate for the CHM community.
